Julian Bialowas } words and pictures

by Ingrid. Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

Julian Bialowas has been making a name for himself on the world web every day for the past year. You might recognise his project, 365Q… a clever combination of stunning outdoor photography, typography and profoundly inspiring quotes released daily.

Browsing through Julian’s work I just knew you guys would love it too, so I got in touch with Julian who kindly shared a few thoughts behind the project and even let me hand pick a few shots – not an easy task at all! You’ll have to check out the full collection for yourselves, but in the meantime enjoy the interview and a few of my faves….

Hey there Julian and welcome to Cohabitaire. Tell us a bit about yourself – what’s your background & what are your passions?

Thanks for having me Ingrid, it’s an honour! Well where to begin… I’m based in the Great White North (Canada) currently finishing up design school while juggling freelance work & personal projects—such as 365q and 16HOURS. Passions include, however are not limited to Photography, Design, Travel & Adventure. Avid mountaineer and self proclaimed coffee connoisseur.

The 365Q project is super cool.
How do you come up with your inspiring quotes?

For the most part the quotations on the photos are not my own, they’re borrowed from great minds who said them first. I strongly believe in crediting and sourcing creative work so the quotes are always sourced to their owners. A handful of days do sport my own—more simplistic words. ie. “Go exploring” “Take a drive. To anywhere.” “Time to go far.” etc, etc.

As for how I pair the words with my photos, I attempt to incorporate designs and phrases that work well with the photograph. They usually end up showcasing how I felt on the day the photograph was taken, or at the time of creating it. I find the phrases from books, movies, papers and day to day conversation.

If you had to choose any standout favourites from the project – which would they be?

It’s always hard to pick a favourite, and it’s forever changing. However if I had to pick one or two right now I’d say Day 311 (above) as it features one of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen and Day 218 (below) as I’m craving a roadtrip right now.

What are your favourite locations / time of day to shoot?

Hands down the Canadian Rocky Mountains which I fortunately live less than an hour away from by car. I love hiking, scrambling & backpacking and the camera always comes along. I could tackle every peak near the Rockies and still not get bored from the views and journeys, I’ll always be amazed by the mountains. As for time of day, sunrise or sunset, it’s the only time you’ll get the amazing colours, clouds & lighting everyone strives for. Which means my alarm clock goes off at 4.00am too often to beat the sun.

Where can readers find your work?

365q’s home is http://365q.ca and for photos without text take a stroll over to flickr.com/julianbialowas. I’m also on twitter @julianbialowas for day to day updates.

Cohabitaire quick five…

1. Morning bird or night owl?
Can I say both? I’ll gladly be out on the town till 2am and up at 6am for a hike. (Coffee permitting.)

2. Fruit or vegetables?
Fruit. Mangos and cantaloupe may be my favourite foods.

3. Beaten track or road less travelled?
Road less travelled.

4. Tropics or mountains?
Mountains. The beach is just there, you have to work to summit that mountain for the view.

5. I love nature because….
The exact same spot in the outdoors can be the peace & quiet you need to get away from your day to day routine, or the eventful adventure to get the heart pumping. It’s ever changing and able to match your mood, not many “things” can do that.
