Where do jeans come from?

by Ingrid. Friday, June 10th, 2011

I really need a new pair of jeans. Every few years it comes to this – the tedious purchasing process I always dread. But this time around on top of worrying about whether my bum is too big in these, I’ll also be considering how sustainable they are too cos I watched this Planet Ark video:

(Hit refresh if it doesn’t show first go)

I’m so pleased to learn my favourite Nudie Jeans use organic cotton as do Levi’s, Kuyichi and Diesel and a tonne of other boutique labels…. get googling.

And what will I do with my old jeans? Cut them off and turn them into shorts… der!

My favorite quote from the video is: “So even though you no longer wear them, why would you leave something so valuable sitting in your wardrobe?”

There’s something about using the word valuable for an item I often find on my bedroom floor. Valuable is usually associated with the jewelry you keep in a box, or a filled wallet – all things related to quick liquidation.

But, whether we think about it or not, those pairs we slide on every day have a story. Two stories actually.

The first is whether or not the production (on farms and in factories) is friendly to the environment. The second is whether or not this same production is friendly to the people.

I know it’s harder to Google the working conditions for a pair of jeans (especially when you’re in the store deciding between one pair and another), but it’s just another side to the dice we should anticipate before making a purchase.

That is so true, Adeline… Like so many of our purchases, clothing or otherwise, we don’t give a second thought to the resources or people who work so hard to make them. In this consumable world we live in, the excess of production means we give little value to things that can be replaced all too easily. If something breaks, why would you get it fixed when you can just buy a new one?! It’s a wasteful trap.
Thanks so much for dropping by and sharing your thoughts.
