We rely on external factors to make us happy when the source of true happiness comes from within, says Matthieu Ricard, the intriguing man who has been scientifically proven to be the happiest person on earth (although I’m not sure when everyone else got tested, but who am I to dispute such findings).
Ricard is Buddhist monk, a passionate photographer and best-selling author, who donates all the proceeds of his work to the Himalayan humanitarian cause Karuna-Shechen.
I found out about Ricard through my sister, who said ‘have you heard about the happiest man alive’ to which I replied ‘no’ to which we turned to YouTube and watched Ricard’s TED talk ‘Habits of happiness‘.
It’s confronting to realise your way of life is contributing to your unhappiness, but what Ricard says makes perfect sense. His TED talk is full off light bulb moments and question raising – were we part of these consumerist trappings he speaks of? We, the yoga practicing, non-animal eating, green-voting people?
Do you see the pattern of these questions? External forces. Things that rely on time and place. Not that they don’t bring about happy feelings, but on their own they are short-lived bursts of happiness – ultimately you need to find it within yourself, by living a compassionate and loving life. You don’t need to be a Buddhist monk to achieve this.
It all sounds easier said than done. But not impossible, with Ricard a living example that happiness is but a thought away. The only thing stopping you is your mind.
