It’s one of those classic traveling strokes of luck, arriving in a foreign city in the middle of a local festival which ends up becoming the highlight of your trip. In this case, we were in traveling through Rajasthan, India and the city we had arrived in was Udaipur. Udaipur is already one of the prettiest cities in India, set on the banks of a lake and full or winding, narrow lanes below one of India’s best palaces.
We arrived in Udaipur in the middle of the Mewar festival, which is held to celebrate the advent of spring. The Mewar festival is a time for the women of Udaipur to dress up in their best clothes and participate in the festival – a colourful procession of music and people and noise winding through the laneways to the lake. I love how foreign cities really come alive for festivals like this, in a way that Australian towns and cities rarely do. I hope that these photos give a sense of the colour, fun and excitement of the festival and maybe stir a little wanderlust for anyone who wants to visit India.
