Somehow, when uprooting our lives to move home from the UK, travelling via South America seemed like a logical idea. It also meant we would stand on all five continents within twelve months. Given we’re unlikely to scale all the world’s tallest peaks this really would be our crowning travel glory!
Hopping on a boat to Antarctica, thinking only about being ready to cross one more off my list, I had absolutely no idea what I was in for.
I can honestly say that nothing had prepared me for the experience of Antarctica. The sheer majesty of the Lemaire Channel literally took my breath away, penguins at play held me captivated for hours and I stood in absolute awe of the courageous petrels and albatross who guarded our passage across the infamously treacherous Ross Sea.
Then again in the rush to return to the beach and the bush, nothing prepared me for the fact that one day I might miss the cosiness of a London pub on a winter’s night, a sun that doesn’t burn or a spring that smells like bluebells.
